"A two-block area of downtown, including the Sandusky County courthouse, was closed for several hours yesterday after a suspicious container was found outside a local business. A vial containing a powdery substance was discovered by an employee at 7 a.m. at the rear of the WSOS Community Action Commission on South Front Street, Fremont police Chief Monte Huss said. A note attached said the substance was anthrax, a deadly livestock disease that can be transmitted to humans. Chief Huss said the county's hazardous materials team responded to the site and removed the matter without incident."

"The cult behind the Tokyo underground nerve gas attack which killed 12 people have apologised on the fifth anniversary of the deaths. Aum Supreme Truth sent a representative to a memorial service for those who died when Sarin nerve gas spread through trains and platforms five years ago. Cult leader Tatsuko Muraoka, 50, said in a statement: 'We would like to renew our acknowledgement of the crime committed five years ago. We will do our best to make an apology and offer compensation as much as possible.' At least 5,000 people were injured in the attack and many are still suffering from the after effects."

4) U.S. Statement on Twelfth Anniversary of the Halabja Massacre

"Today we extend greetings to Muslims around the world on the beginning of Eid al-Adha. As we note this joyous occasion, we also recall that this day marks the twelfth anniverary of Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons attack on Halabja, a Kurdish city in northeastern Iraq. We understand that many Muslims in the Kurdish region have taken the extraordinary step of suspending the observance of the feast in order to commemorate the Halabja attack with fitting solemnity. On March 16, 1998, an estimated 5,000 civilians were killed and 10,000 injured when Iraqi air forces bombarded Halabja with mustard and other poison gases. Twelve years after the massacre, the people of Halabja still suffer from very high rates of serious diseases such as cancer and birth defects. The victims of Halabja deserve justice and the support of the international community. The attack on Halabja, which was a crime against humanity, is emblematic of a long history of criminal conduct by Saddam Hussein's regime. The United States has long called for an international tribunal to investigate, indict and, if possible, prosecute Saddam Hussein and his top lieutenants for their crimes, which continue to this day in the south and central parts of the country. We support international efforts to document Iraqi crimes against humanity and to establish a lasting record of Saddam Hussein's criminal culpability. The investigation and prosecution of Saddam Hussein for violations of international humanitarian law is long overdue."

5) Wanted on chemical weapons charge
Northern Light/Africa News
March 17, 2000

"The mystery man behind Mpumalanga's R1,3-billion promissory note deal, international fugitive Moshe Regenstreich, has been linked to illegal trade in chemical weapons, including deadly mustard and sarin nerve gas. Regenstreich, also known by his Israeli family name of Regev, was blacklisted by the United States Congress and State Department in 1995 after his import/export company, Mainway Limited (Germany), was linked to the sale of equipment, material, know-how and technology to Iran for the manufacture of chemical weapons. Mustard gas was used extensively in the war between Iran and Iraq, while sarin gas killed 12 and injured 6,000 Tokyo residents in a 1995 terror attack. The White House branded the sales as a violation of international regulations against the proliferation of chemical weapons and a direct threat to regional political stability."
